Functional Braces

Functional Braces

What do functional braces do?

Functional braces are appliances designed to correct jaw positioning. They are typically recommended for younger patients with severe overbites, as they help guide the jaw to grow into the ideal position.

What does a twin block brace do?

Orthodontists typically fit functional appliances, like twin blocks, to reduce the prominence of upper incisors and improve the bite. These appliances consist of two removable blocks—one for the top teeth and one for the bottom. By holding the lower jaw forward, they generate a force that moves the upper teeth backward and the lower teeth forward.

How long does it take for twin block braces to work?

Twin block braces typically take 6-9 months to be effective, usually followed by 1-2 years of fixed brace treatment. For best results, wear the twin blocks full time and keep the blocks together. Initially, the appliance may feel uncomfortable.

Do functional braces hurt?

Will the functional braces hurt? You may experience some discomfort in your mouth for the first 5-7 days after getting your functional brace and for a day or two after each adjustment. Your teeth might feel a bit sore, and parts of the brace may rub against your gums, lips, cheeks, or tongue.

How long do you have to wear functional braces?

The duration of treatment with functional braces depends on the severity of the problem. You should wear functional appliances full-time, day and night, for about 6 months. After this period, your orthodontist may advise you to wear the braces only at night to maintain the improvements.

Can your jaw move back after wearing twin blocks?

When you wear twin blocks together, your jaw muscles stretch and work like an elastic band, pulling the top teeth back and the lower teeth forward. Over time, the lower jaw won’t be as far forward because the top teeth will have moved back to meet it.

Sometimes they may be some favourable growth of the jaws.  They must be removed for clean, swimming and contact sports/ Further orthodontic treatment with fixed braces is usually needed after functional appliance treatment.
